The Wesertor district lies northeast of the city center and transitions into the districts of Fasanenhof and Wolfsanger-Hasenhecke to the north and northeast. The Fulda river forms the southern and eastern boundary of the district, providing important natural areas for the otherwise densely populated district with a multicultural, lively character.
The residential areas of Wesertor are characterized by multi-lane main roads and residential buildings mostly with 3 to 6 floors. The quarter around Pferdemarkt still belongs to the former old town area. Unfortunately, only the ruins of Zeughaus and Karlshospital, the small narrow alleys, and partly preserved cobblestone paving bear witness to this.
Except for a Gründerzeit-style block at Gartenstraße/Ysenburgstraße/Schirmerstraße, the rest of the district's appearance is determined by buildings constructed during the reconstruction period. In addition to many small and medium-sized retail and specialty shops, large commercial establishments on the Fulda riverbank (Kassel drainage operations, sewage treatment plant) and a large self-service department store shape the district's image.
The adjacent university campus, a high proportion of general and vocational schools and other public institutions, as well as the nearby Klinikum Kassel, positively influence the district's development.
Along and near the major main roads, local supply in the district is well organized. The Altmarkt, the largest and most important intersection in the city of Kassel, is a hub for private and public transport. The city center is easily reachable on foot from the west of the district, and the tram provides quick and easy access to the city center from anywhere.
The good transport connections, many schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, and Klinikum Kassel make the district popular with families.
