Johannstadt is one of the suburbs of Dresden. It lies east of the old town on the Elbe and belongs to the Altstadt district office, being divided into the two statistical districts Johannstadt-Nord and -Süd and part of the Altstadt II district. The district is named after King Johann (1801-1873) of Saxony. Historically, Johannstadt began to develop mainly from 1877, when it was connected to Neustadt by the Albert Bridge. With the University Hospital 'Carl Gustav Carus', which emerged from the Medical Academy Dresden founded in 1954, the largest hospital in Dresden is located in Johannstadt. Additionally, the St. Joseph-Stift hospital is located in the south of the district. The district area is dominated by prefabricated buildings from the GDR era, many of which have been renovated in recent years. In eastern Johannstadt, however, there are many Gründerzeit buildings. To the east lies Striesen, to the northeast Blasewitz, to the south Seevorstadt-Ost/Großer Garten and to the west the Pirnaische Vorstadt. The Elbe is to the north. Important streets and squares in Johannstadt include Pfotenhauerstraße, Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer, Gerokstraße, Trinitatisplatz, Blasewitzer Straße, Striesener Straße, Güntzplatz, Sachsenplatz. One of the largest Dresden cemeteries is the Johannstädter Trinitatisfriedhof, where among others the painter Caspar David Friedrich found his final resting place.
