The name Buchholz has existed since the Middle Ages and refers to a forest area mainly consisting of beech trees. The place Buchholz can be spoken of from 1830. With the clearing of part of the Huckinger Mark from 1820, farmland was created for agricultural use and settlement. Of the original forest, only the beech forest on Wedauer Straße and parts of the area that has included the Duisburg Forest Cemetery ("New Cemetery") since 1923 remain today.
Buchholz has a connection to the A 59. Previously, the motorway ended in Buchholz. Therefore, the on-ramp is only possible in the northbound direction and the off-ramp only from this direction. Later it was extended southwards and now ends in Rahm at the B 288. However, no additional on- or off-ramps were built in Buchholz during the expansion, but the new connection in Großenbaum is not far away.
