The district is named after King Johann (1801-1873) of Saxony. Historically, Johannstadt began to develop mainly from 1877, when it was connected to Neustadt by the Albert Bridge. With the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, which emerged from the Medical Academy Dresden founded in 1954, the largest Dresden hospital is located in Johannstadt. In addition, the St. Joseph-Stift hospital is located in the south of the district.
Many Gründerzeit buildings are located in the district area. To the east lies Blasewitz, to the southeast Striesen, to the south Seevorstadt-Ost/ Großer Garten and to the west the Pirnaische Vorstadt.
