In the district of Heiligendamm, about 6 km away, the city has an approximately 1 km long Baltic Sea beach. To the west at Kleiner Wohld there is a steep coast, to the east a flat coast that transitions into Heiligen Damm. In the city area and nearby there are larger forests, including Großer and Kleiner Wohld, Kellerswald, and Doberaner Holz. To the northwest, the city borders the Conventer See.
Bad Doberan is about 16 km from the Hanseatic city of Rostock, Warnemünde, and Kühlungsborn respectively.
