Of People and Horses
Two themes have been closely linked with the history of Horn for many decades: the Rauhe Haus and the Horner racecourse. The Rauhe Haus is a last remnant of the district's rural past. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the help of the theologian Wichern, a children's home was established in an old straw cottage, which over the years developed into one of Germany's most important social institutions. Even today, the Wichern-Kate is used as a conference center and museum.

Picnic at the Racecourse
In the heart of Horn lies the racecourse. For almost 150 years, the Hamburg Gallop Derby has taken place here once a year. However, for most Horn residents, the social event is less important than the great recreational value of the facility. When no horses are racing here, people grill and picnic on the large lawns, play football, basketball, and mini-golf, jog, or walk their dogs. And in the small lake in the middle of the racecourse, anglers cast their bait hoping for a good catch.
